Rhymes in words, images and materials unfold on different surfaces. Translating my ideas into drawings, glass, and wood is a process in which forms constantly take on a different surface. Because ideas constantly change their material, they reveal something fleeting and uncertain about their materiality. With pencil on paper, I create a constellation of lines, shapes, and textures in which clouds, fabric, and paper change shape. Figures I draw land on paper, take on the flat surface as a temporary presence. I see my work as a process in which I constantly depict associations with words in a different material.
Sophie Mastenbroek (1998) is a multidisciplinary artist based in The Hague whose practice spans drawing, collage, sculpture, installation and material-based processes. Inspired by close observations of fleeting phenomena in the natural world, she develops a visual vocabulary in which moments, forms and materials begin to rhyme with one another. Her layered compositions trace the connections that emerge between them, moving between abstraction and representation.
Within the frame of the page, Mastenbroek builds layered compositions in which fragments of observation coexist without settling into a single perspective, echoing the way moments are perceived and remembered. In sculpture and installation, the same visual vocabulary is extended into space, where paper, wood, clay and other materials contribute their own structures, textures and logics. Through their multi-faceted construction, different forms and relationships come into view as the viewer moves around the work. Each shift in viewpoint reveals new connections, reflecting the layered and ever-changing nature of the moments from which the work emerges.
